LISBON — Southern Local had to wait a bit to get to 5-0 but it was worth it.

After an 8:51 p.m. kick off thanks to seven storm delays, Southern rampaged over Lisbon in a 36-6 win on Friday during Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference action.

“Well, we have been here six hours and fifteen minutes,” an exhausted Indians head coach Rich Wright remarked. “I think it took its toll getting emotions up twice. It was a long night, but we are 5 and 0 and that was our goal.”

The Indians used both a power running game and the passing of quarterback Jayce Sloan to rack up over 200 yards in the first half while staking themselves to a 22-0 halftime advantage. Sloan would rush for 44 yards and pass for 192 yards on 7 of 10 attempts.

“My line, they are unbelievable,” Sloan remarked. “We’ve been underlooked the whole season. (Dylan) Milhoan can run the ball, (Cam) Groadhaus is a great playmaker, my brother Bradly is a great playmaker. When I throw the ball those guys go and get it. These guys are athletes.”

“We have speed with our wide receivers in Brad Sloan — he can run anywhere on the field. He is the fastest dude I’ve ever seen, ever,” Cam Grodhaus said of the Indians big play threat. “But none of us could anything without our line. They make it all happen.”

Southern (2-0 in the league) took charge on the opening drive by marching 70 yards on six plays culminating in a Bradly Sloan 47-yard touchdown pass from Jayce Sloan with 8:21 left in the first quarter. Jayce Sloan added a two-point conversion.

Lisbon (2-3, 0-2) countered with a drive down to the Southern 32, but the drive was stalled as they turned the ball over on downs at the Southern 33.

Southern then countered with another score capped by a 13-play, 67-yard drive with a 3-yard River Pappas touchdown run with 10 minutes to go in the second quarter. A lightning strike sent the game into a thirty-minute delay after that.

After the teams came back from the break, Southern pushed the advantage to 22-0 on a Cam Grodhaus 84-yard touchdown reception from Jayce Sloan with 7:05 left in the first half.

Lisbon tried to respond on their first drive of the second half as they drove deep into Indians territory again. This time The Indians defense came up with a big play as they picked off a Logan Bell pass and returned it to the Indians 36 at the 8:02 mark of the quarter.

The Indians basically put the game away then as Grodhaus tacked on a 7-yard touchdown pass from Jayce Sloan with 2:05 left in the third to push it to 28-0. Sloan picked up a third and twenty-three play with a 31-yard run around left end, down to the Devils 23.

Logan Bell got the Devils on the board with a 16-yard run with 10:21 left in the game to make it 28-6.

“That Bell, he’s tough, he’s hard to bring down” Wright described the Devils quarterback Logan Bell. “They did a good job of keeping the ball out of our hands.’

Grodhaus pushed it into running clock territory with a 20-yard touchdown reception from Jayce Sloan in addition to a Jayce Sloan to Mark Soukup conversion with 7:44 left in the game.

“We have get better at some things,” Wright said. “Few too many penalties there in the fourth quarter, and some little mental breakdowns.”

“It’s going to be a dog fight here the last five (games),” Wright added. “Anytime you come to this field (Lisbon) in these condiations and you get a win. I haven’t had good real luck here lately, so it was nice to get a win over a team that can still in the playoffs in Lisbon.”

Southern hosts East Palestine next Friday. Lisbon is at Leetonia next Friday.

¯ Lisbon honored its hall of fame honorees before the game. Lisbon decided to have the ceremony prior to kickoff rather than at halftime due to the threatening weather.
