Skies open up in Potters’ win over Golden Bears

From Staff Reports

NEW MANCHESTER, W.Va. — The skies opened up and took center stage on Friday night as Oak Glen and East Liverpool went at it.

During the first half, while other area teams waited through long lightning delays, the Bears and Potters dueled in monsoon-like conditions. When it all cleared it was the Potters who ended up on top, 47-21.

“I’ve never seen a game where it rained that hard,” Oak Glen coach Ted Arneault said.

“I’ve never been in rain that hard before,” East Liverpool coach Josh Ludwig said. “It was tough to even see the field from sideline. It was just a battle to see who could hang onto the ball.”

The game got to halftime without a delay and the game tied at 14, but the lightning arrived to force the teams into an extended halftime.

The delay was not ideal for either team.

“We tried to get the guys off their feet and dry off,” Ludwig said. “I don’t think it helps either team, getting hyped up and sitting for that long isn’t good for the kids muscles.”

“I think it helps us as a passing team to have the dry conditions. Having a dry football should be huge. Kids passed time by listening to music and trying to stay loose.”

The game wrapped up at around 11:15 p.m.

Derek Carter led the Potter attack with 129 yards rushing on 17 carries and two touchdowns. Cory Weyand added 18 rushed for 78 yards and two touchdowns. Peyton Reed completed all six of his passes for 101 yards and a 57-yard electric strike to Timmy Neal. Neal also had an interception.

Noah Wheaton sparked the Potter defense with two picks. Jayce Frank had a fumble recovery.

Brayden Mineard had an interception for the Golden Bears.

For Oak Glen, Nick Chaney completed 13 of 28 passes for 170 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions. Hunter Patterson caught seven balls for 72 yards and two touchdowns.

East Liverpool moved to 3-2. Oak Glen fell to 2-3.

East Liverpool hosts Martins Ferry Friday. Oak Glen is at Edison on Friday.
