Attendance rises

COLUMBUS — The Ohio high school baseball and softball state tournaments — which included Division III state baseball champion South Range and Division II state softball runner-up West Branch — both saw attendance increase this spring.

The Ohio High School Athletic Association Board of Directors reviewed the attendance figures Thursday. The baseball state tournament attendance was 13,962, up from 12,522 in 2017. The softball state tournament attendance was 8,094, up from 7,437 in 2017.

The dual team wrestling state tournament drew 3,491 fans and operated at a loss of $19,733. The individual wrestling state tournament had a paid attendance of 45,400, which was down from 47,758 in 2017.

In swimming, the total paid attendance at the state tournament at Canton’s Branin Natatorium was 8,376, down from 8,508 in 2017.

817 OHSAA members

COLUMBUS — The Ohio High School Athletic Association will open the 2018-19 school year with 817 member schools.

The four new schools include Delaware Olentangy Berlin, Willoughby Andrews Osborne Academy, East Dayton Christian and Cincinnati Mercy McAuley (consolidation of McAuley and Mother of Mercy). In addition, Youngstown Chaney has rejoined.

Four schools are no longer OHSAA members, including Canton Heritage Christian, East Richland Christian (St. Clairsville), Mount Gilead Christian, Gahanna Christian.

Kids fishing event

CHESTER, W.Va. — The Chester-Newell Sportsmen Club will hold a free kids fishing tournament for those 3 to 15 from 1:30 to 4 p.m. on Aug. 18 at the club lake. Prizes, hot dogs and drinks will be provided.

Cavaliers set preseason games

CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Cavaliers will begin preparation for the 2018-19 season with four preseason games, including one at Michigan State University.

The slate of games will feature two home contests at Quicken Loans Arena on Sat., Oct. 6 versus the Boston Celtics and Mon., Oct. 8 versus the Indiana Pacers. The team will hit the road for an away contest at the Boston Celtics’ TD Garden on Tues., Oct. 2.

The preseason opens at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 2 at the Boston Celtics in TD Garden. The next two games will be at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, vs. the Boston Celtics at 7 p.m. Oct. 6 and the Indiana Pacers at 7 p.m. Oct. 8. The preseason concludes against the Detroit Pistons at Jack Breslin Student Events Center on the campus of Michigan State University.

COLUMBIANA — The Mahoning Valley Volleyball Officials Association season preview will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Columbiana High School. Proceeds from the preview will be going into the MVVOA’s Scholarship Fund which will be awarded to an area volleyball player.

Hubbard’s jayvees will face Leetonia in the opener at 10 a.m. Hubbard’s varsity will play Columbiana’s varsity at 11 a.m. Liberty’s varsity will play United’s varsity at noon and West Branch and East Palestine’s varsity will play at 1 p.m.

Tickets are $4 for adults and $3 for seniors (65 and over). Students are $2.

CHESTER, W.Va. — The Chester-Newell Sportsmen Club is having its last catfish tournament for the season starting at 7 p.m. on Saturday and ending a.m. Sunday. All fish must be measured for length by 7 a.m. Sunday at Chester City Park marina. Cost is $10 per fisherman. Sign up at Chaney’s Sunoco in Chester.

CHESTER, W.Va. — The Chester-Newell Sportsmen Club will hold a ‘Women on Target’ class on Aug. 18 for those women interested in learning how to use a handgun. Cost is $35 and includes lunch, T-shirt and all ammo. Call or text Tammy West at (304) 218-9534 to register.

CHESTER, W.Va. — A 3D animal archery shoot will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Aug. 26 at the club grounds. Cost is $10 per shooter. Kids 10 and under shoot free. Kitchen will be open.
