Support needed for Beaver volleyball player

CALCUTTA–The Beaver Local community has been pulling together to rally around one its own.

Beaver Local junior volleyball player Lauren Thomas suffered a severe stroke while participating in a volleyball camp on July 14 at Youngstown State University. After being taken to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital for emergency surgery, Thomas was transferred to Akron Childrens Hospital for further treatment.

Thursday, the Beaver Local community will be holding a pasta dinner to benefit Thomas and her family. The dinner will be from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Beaver Local High School cafeteria. Cost is $8 for adults and $6 for senior citizens and ages 12 and under. Takeout is available and there will also be a Chinese auction and 50/50 raffle. T-shirts and wristbands will be available for sale.

Members of the volleyball team will be working the dinner along with help from the school staff.

Beaver Local volleyball coach Sarah Lowe said that Thomas has shown improvement each day, but the long-term outlook remains unclear.

“Right now, we’re still taking things day-by-day, there is no final word on the long-term prognosis,” Lowe said. “Lauren is a very strong-willed and determined person and she keeps making progress. Everyone is keeping her in their thoughts and prayers.”

Since the incident, the Beavers have received an outpouring of support both locally and from areas far and wide. Lowe said that high school teams from as far away as Texas have purchased T-shirts that the Beavers are selling. She also said that other Beaver Local athletic teams, as well as teams from the surrounding area, have donated items for the auction.

“It’s been amazing how everyone has come together and shown their support,” Lowe said. “The involvement from the Beaver Local community and the surrounding area has been huge. We can’t thank everyone enough.”

In addition to the pasta dinner, there will be a benefit for Thomas from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday at the Calcutta Pizza Hut. Those interested in donating money to the cause online are asked to see tmcfunding.com and look for Lauren’s fundraiser under the Fundraisers section.
