Jarrett makes it three straight

Morning Journal/Ron Firth United Local’s Camryn Jarrett clears 5-foot, 3-inches in the high jump on Wednesday during the Div. III regional meet at Massillon Perry High School.

MASSILLON — United senior high jumper Camryn Jarrett saves her best for the end of the season.

“I think I get anxious and my adrenaline gets me going higher,” she said. “It counts more at the end of the season.”

Jarrett repeated as the Massillon Perry Division III regional champion Wednesday to earn her third straight state berth.

“It’s always the goal at the beginning the season,” she said.

Jarrett had a season-best jump of 5-foot-3 to top LaBrae sophomore Savannah Bennett for the regional title.

She knew the field included seven jumpers who went 5-0 at districts and nine others who cleared 4-10.

“I have to keep myself confident,” Jarrett said. “I’ve done it before and I can do it again.”

She made her first four jumps as she got through 5-foot-1 with no misses.

“I try to make it on my first try and that helped me today,” she said.

That guaranteed her another state berth. The top four finishers advance to the state meet next Friday afternoon at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium on the campus of Ohio State University.

“I was in the top four,” Jarrett said. “I knew I qualified and would go to state. I said there is nothing to worry about and have some fun.”

She made 5-2 on her third attempt and 5-3 on her second.

“That was probably a 5-5 jump,” Jarrett said.

She will be graduating from United on Sunday before turning her attention to the state meet.

“I will just keep practicing,” Jarrett said. “The goal always is to PR (personal record) at state. As long as I PR, I’ll be happy.”

She has the last two years, clearing 5-4 as a sophomore and a career-best 5-5 as a junior at the state meet.

“I’m still going to high jump at Youngstown State, but it’s sad to see my last season in high school is almost over,” Jarrett said.

Meet notes

¯ Newton Falls senior Izzy Kline got off a 44-foot shot put before heading to the high jump, placing third at 5-1. She was an easy winner in the shot put (44-6 3/4).

“That’s something,” Jarrett said. “I wish I was going in two events. I know how great it was when I was a sophomore and also went in the 400 relay.”

Kline was the state runner-up in the Division II shot put last year, finishing behind East Liverpool’s Lindsay Baker.

¯ The East Palestine girls 3200-meter relay team of Hope Figley, Faith Figley, Emily Zimmerman and Alexis Cunningham was ninth in a season-best time of 10:14.12.

The Bulldogs ran together the last three meets and ran 10:14 all three races.

United’s Molly Briceland, Abbey Crawford, Hannah Minor and Ellie Marhefka were 11th (10:35.66) and Columbiana’s Destiny Kulka, Gabby Vivo, Emily Starkey and Klara Crisp were 14th (11:067.26).

Gilmour Academy won in 9:32.35.

¯ Sophomores Kayla Muslovski of Columbiana and Izzy Perez of Lisbon and the Springfield 400 and 800 relay teams were the lone area runners to advance out of Wednesday’s preliminaries.

The top two in each heat plus the next four fastest times advance to Friday’s finals.

Muslovski was fourth fastest in the 200 dash (an area-best 26.33) and Perez was seventh in the 100 dash (13.02). Malvern sophomore Zoe Moser had the top times in both events (12.22 and 25.09).

Springfield’s Anna Ohlin, Haley LaMorticella, Shantel Springer and Cierra Latronica were fourth in the 800 relay (1:49.15) and sixth in the 400 relay (51.86). The same squads ran at state last year.

¯ Other area athletes competing in Wednesday’s girls preliminaries were Perez, ninth in the 200 dash (26.95); Ohlin ninth (47.89) and Columbiana’s Taylor Hall 14th (51.06) in the 300 hurdles; Latronica, 12th in the 200 dash (27.35) and 16th in the 100 dash (13.52); and Western Reserve junior Maddy Owen, 14th in the 100 hurdles (17.53).

¯ Columbiana’s Izzy Stohecker, Taylor Hall, Trinity Strohecker and Kayla Muslovski were ninth in the 400 relay (52.08).

¯ In the 1600 relay, Western Reserve’s Kayla Owen, Maddy Owen, Olivia Pater and Olivia Altiere were 12th (4:24.06) and United’s Grace Maroscher, Jordan Davis, Molly Briceland and Hannah Minor were 15th (4:31.80).
