New Philadelphia routs Beavers
BY DAN SANTARELLI
NEW PHILADELPHIA — The Beaver Local girls basketball team saw its season end on Saturday to top-seeded New Philadelphia in the Division II East sectional final after the Quakers shooting hand caught fire in the second half.
“New Philadelphia is a nice team,” Beaver Local coach Stephanie Coie said. “They returned their whole lineup from last year’s district championship team and can shoot from anywhere on the floor.”
The Beavers managed to keep the score within 10 for most of the first half and early parts of the second but New Philadelphia ran away with a 71-36 win thanks to a huge run by the Quakers.
Beaver Local concludes the season with a 12-12 record.
New Philadelphia improves to 21-2 and advances to the district semifinal against John Glenn on Wednesday at a site to be determined.
The Beavers cut the lead to 34-25 with six minutes remaining in the third quarter but the Quakers shooting woke up after that. New Philadelphia outscored Beaver 37-11 from that point on until the buzzer.
“We had too many turnovers in the second half,” Beaver Local coach Stephanie Coie said. “New Philadelphia is a nice team and they can shoot from anywhere on the floor.”
Eight of New Philadelphia’s 10 three-pointers came in the second half.
“They were moving around all the time on offense and their were times were we weren’t moving enough on offense in the second half,” Coie said.
The Beavers only trailed 12-9 at the end of the first quarter and 31-17 at the half.
“The first half we were swinging the ball and getting the ball inside to our post players,” Coie said. “We went into halftime talking about trying to replicate that. In the second half we struggled with handling the ball, rebounding and shooting.”
The Beavers first half production mostly came from Jenna Riccardo who had 10 of the teams 17 first half points.
“We only played seven players most of the game asking them to play more than they usually do,” Coie said. “We played the best we could and that’s all we could ask for. We had a good season and now we look forward to next year.”
Beaver Local also saw a contribution from Kierra Taylor with 10 points.
New Philadelphia was playing without it’s leading scorer Aaliyah Currence (illness) but other players stepped up big for the Quakers.
“We had to adjust to that and you saw that the girls reacted to that in a positive way,” New Philadelphia coach Tracy Payne said. “We started off slow because we’ve had 10 days off but they started grinding away in the second half.”
The Quakers held the Beavers to 19 second half points with 11 of those coming from Riccardo.
“In the second half I told the girls to get in front of her so we could cut off the passing lanes,” Payne said. “The help side did a great job not letting them drive in on us.”
New Philadelphia had four scorers in double-digits being led by Josie Pry with 16 points and Rachel Anderson with 14 points.
“This tournaments going to be a grind and I’m glad we are moving on,” Payne said.
¯ Beaver Local bids farewell to three seniors including it’s point guard in Kierra Taylor.
“Madison Ours is going to have to step into that role next year,” Coie said. “It’s nice that we have Jenna and Madison (Cline) coming back next season but we are going to need some players to step up next year. We talked at halftime about working in the offseason. You don’t get better in the season, you get better in the offseason. They have to be willing to put in the work.”
¯ New Philadelphia was the Eastern Central Ohio League Champions finishing league play at 14-0. Payne says Beaver is comparative to some teams within its league.
“Beaver is a nice team and they compare to some of the teams in our league,” Payne said. “They work hard and could run the floor. We’ve seen better talent and we’ve seen worse talent this season.”
