Beavers ready for tournaments
CALCUTTA–The Beaver Local wrestling team dropped a late season dual contest to Steubenville on Wednesday night.
Despite being short-handed, the Big Red picked up a 36-27 win over the Beavers.
“We came out and battled hard tonight,” Beaver Local coach Jordan Williams said. “They won the toss but I like the way our kids competed. It was a good chance for our kids to wrestle a solid team before the postseason.”
The action started strong for the Beavers when senior Chad Mays won an 11-8 decision over Hezakiah Scurry in the 182-pound match.
Beaver Local’s Daniel Wirth picked up a quick pin in 1:21 over Steubenville’s Anthony Boley.
Steubenville was short handed due to injuries on the night.
“We are pretty banged up,” Steubenville coach Mike Blackburn said. “We knew coming in we would be down because of forfeits. We always have good duals with Beaver and had to move around some weight classes.”
Big Red picked up nine victories while the Beavers only won two matches outside of three forfeits.
“The guys adjusted really well considering the changes that we had to make tonight,” Blackburn said.
The Beavers were tied with Big Red at 27 going into the final two matches but Steubenville’s Jashon Hubbard earned a pin over Beaver Local’s Chris Yanni in 18 seconds to gain the six points.
Big Red led 33-27 and in the final match Big Red’s David Tuttle won a 5-2 decision over the Beavers’ Christian Lerussi to seal the 36-27 win.
“It was not our best day, but we got an opportunity to get on the mat and wrestle a good team and that’s a positive,” Williams said. “It’s time to regroup and put our focus on the postseason.”
Beaver Local and Steubenville return to action on Feb. 24 at the Steubenville Div. II sectional wrestling tournament.
“Our kids look forward to this time of year,” Williams said. “They look forward to representing our school. The post-season means everything to our program. I know our guys are looking forward to excitement that this time of year brings.”
“It’s at our place and we always like to think we are the favorites but Beaver Local is there,” Blackburn said. “It’ll be another nice battle between Beaver Local and us at the sectionals next weekend.”
¯It was Beaver Local’s senior night and six Beaver grapplers including Damien Emmert, Josh Speelman, Zach Thomas, Chad Mays, Noah Smith and Chris Yanni were recognized prior to the match.
“Its been an honor to coach these seniors and I understand what it takes to be a great wrestler,” Williams said. “They have gone through a lot of hard work and struggle to help this program be great. When you have kids that have been around this program for four years and done what they’ve done, they have my respect and love forever. These are six tough kids and they are going to be better people for spending the past four years in our wrestling room.”
