Raiders have the might to top Irish
GREENFORD — In a battle of two of the stronger girls basketball programs in Mahoning County, South Range was able to come through with a 54-49 win over Youngstown Ursuline on Thursday night.
The Raiders were led by senior Maddie Durkin as she tallied 17 points and eight rebounds to lift the winners to 11-1. Ursuline fell to 6-5.
Ursuline led 18-13 after the first quarter before the Raiders started to turn it around. South Range grabbed the lead back at 31-30 late in the third quarter on a Durkin basket and never trailed again.
A flurry of offensive play including a three from Durkin, two threes from Bri Modic, a jumper from Bree Kohler and a Samantha Patrone layup off a pass from Durkin made it 46-37 with 6:12 left in the fourth.
Ursuline did make it interesting though.
Dayshonette Harris, who led the Irish with 21 points, tied it at 46 on a basket with 3:04 left in the game.
Izzy Lampardy got a steal and a jumper with 2:37 left in the game to make it 48-46 in favor of Range.
Modic then hit a three off a Lampardy rebound with 1:34 left to push it to 51-46. Harris had one more three in her to close the gap to 51-49, but that was all Ursuline had left as the Raiders closed it out with free throws.
Modic ended up with 15 points and Lampardy also played a significant role with 12 points.
South Range won the jayvee game, 47-10. Marlaina Slabach had 18 points, while Emily Irons added 16 points.
