Brooke bags victory at Oak Glen’s place

NEW MANCHESTER, W.Va. – The Brooke girls basketball team had what coach Ryan Scherich thought was a sloppy 55-39 victory Thursday at Oak Glen and needed someone to step up.

That someone, as it usually is for the Bruins (9-2), was Hope Bowman who dominated with a game-highs in points (22) and rebounds (23).

“It was a really nice night for her,” Scherich said. “She really likes this gym, she had a big night here last year too.”

Despite the big performance from Bowman, Scherich was not pleased with the performance against what he thought was a much improved Golden Bears (4-8) club from the teams first meeting.

“It was really sloppy,” Scherich said. “Oak Glen is very much improved and they played hard. They wanted to win just as bad as we did. We played sloppy and kind of fed into what they wanted to do.

“I don’t think we are at good team status. We are not there yet. There are so many things we have to clean up still. Sooner or later a game like this is going to come back and bite us.”

Oak Glen scored first and led early before the Bruins pulled ahead for a 17-13 lead after the opening eight minutes. The Golden Bears cut the deficit to just two at the break after a slow second quarter ended with Brooke on top 24-22.

The third quarter is when the Bruins started to get back on track. Brooke opened the quarter with a 10-1 run to build on the lead.

“That was huge,” Scherich said of the run. “We got a little bit of a different line up in there and it worked.”

Oak Glen battled back to trail by just six headed to the fourth quarter, but lost Alexa Andrews, to an injury during the quarter.

The Bruins pulled away in the third for the 16 point victory.

Bowman provided a lot of matchup problems for Leary’s bunch.

“We tried to do the best we could on her but she’s 6-foot-2 or whatever she is and my tallest girl is 5-foot-8,” Leary said. “Overall I am very proud of that effort.”

Brooke is back in action against Wheeling Park at home on Monday, Oak Glen is scheduled to host Indian Creek on Saturday.

Game note:

ïOak Glen pulled out a close victory in the jayvee game, 28-26. Brooklyn Loveland led the Golden Bears with eight points, while Kaleigh Edgar had 10 points for Brooke.
