Potters race past Beavers

East Liverpool’s Gabe Roach gets off a shot against Beaver Local’s Zak Pappas on Friday night.

EAST LIVERPOOL — The East Liverpool Potters have been on a roll over the past week and the rivalry game against Beaver Local on Friday was no exception.

East Liverpool ran away with a 96-69 win on Friday night after an explosive offensive first half from the Potters.

This is East Liverpool’s fourth win in a row and they are 4-1 on the season.

“This game is a rivalry in every sport and both teams had great crowds tonight,” East Liverpool coach Nate Conley. “I’m glad we came out on top.”

The Potters hit seven 3-point shots helping them outscore the Beavers 53-26 in the first two quarters of play.

“We came out with a lot of energy,” Conley said. “Beaver Local is a scrappy bunch and I give them all the credit but our guys came to play tonight.”

The Potters were led by both Gabe Roach with 33 points, eight assists and five steals while Tre Jackson finished with 28 points, six assists and five steals.

Jackson finished the night 6 for 10 from beyond the three-point line.

“The beginning of the season my shot wasn’t really falling,” Jackson said. “I came into the gym early tonight to shoot around and brought it into tonight’s game.”

Beaver Local suffered its first loss of the season and is now 2-1.

“We have to be able to execute under pressure,” Beaver Local coach Jason Pacanowski said. “I told the kids all week in practice its going to be hard to simulate the pressure they bring in their press sets.

“We have a lot of young guys that panicked in the situation and we will learn from this.”

The Beavers had 24 turnovers, including 16 steals by the Potters.

“Our guys put a lot into this and we are going to use this as a learning experience to keep building,” Pacanowksi said.

Beaver Local was led by Luke Chetock who finished with 19 points and Zak Pappas with nine points.

“Hats off to East Liverpool tonight they executed their game plan and out executed us on both ends of the floor,” Pacanowski.

East Liverpool has been playing a fast pace to put out the high scoring output.

“These teams come out and play our style of basketball and we’ve been able to put the ball in the bucket,” Conley said.

The Potters pressured the Beavers a lot in the first half.

“It all starts up top with the length of Brennan O’Hara and the team’s anticipation,” Conley said.

O’Hara finished the night with five points, four rebounds and three steals.

Also for East Liverpool, Izaiha Browning had a strong performance finishing with 17 points and seven rebounds.

East Liverpool return to action Dec. 28 against East Palestine at home in the East Liverpool Holiday Tournament.

“We have a long lay off after this and I hope we can carry this momentum,” Conley said.

Beaver Local hosts Buckeye Local on Tuesday.
