Lasure, Thomas guide Beavers

CAMBRIDGE — West Branch junior Christian Wayt and Beaver Local sophomore Cole McComas are back at it, only at a higher weight.

After McComas ended last season with a 4-3 win over Wayt in the Division II 106-pound third-place match at the state tournment, the two met again in Saturday’s season opener at the Cambridge Invitational.

Wayt recorded an 8-1 decision over McComas in the 120-pound finals to finish with a 5-0 mark.

But the Beavers got titles from sophomore Skyler Lasure (132) and senior Zach Thomas (285) to win the team title. Lasure — who was seventh at state in Division II 120 pounds last season — received the Most Outstanding Wrestling award.

The Beavers topped the 16-team field with 246 points, followed by West Branch with 212 1/2. Minerva tied for fourth and Salem was 12th.

Salem freshman Caiden Hart (106), West Branch junior Neil Ginnetti (170) and West Branch freshman Kenny Marra (195) also won individual titles.

Potters go 2-3

BOARDMAN — Howard Williams went 5-0 at 106 pounds to lead the East Liverpool wrestling team at the Boardman Duals on Saturday.

East Liverpool finished fourth out of eight teams..

The Potters went 2-3 on the day — beating Stow Munroe-Falls (45-30) and Akron Ellet (54-27) while losing to Alliance (52-24) Austintown Fitch (54-18) and Boardman (51-30).

Other Potters with winning records were Anthony Mecum (4-1 at 182 pounds), Skyler Wooley (4-0 at 285), Justin Buchheit (3-2 at 113), Jonathan Potts (3-2 at 126) and Matt Ketchum (2-0 at 170).

East Liverpool will be at the Barnesville Invitational on Friday and Saturday.

Bears beat Rebs

BROOKE, W.Va. — Oak Glen won a pair of matches during Saturday’season opener at Brooke High School.

The Golden Bears beat Crestview, 48-19, and host Brooke, 50-24.

Oak Glen will be back in action next Saturday at the John Marshall Duals.

Two Beavers win

BELMONT — Beaver Local’s Colton Dugan (106) and Sam Lowe (285) won titles at the Rick Link Union Local wrestling tournament Saturday.

The Beavers took their ‘B’ team and finished eight out of 17 team as Garrett Morris (152) placed fourth and Garrett Speelman (160) and Alex Solansky (182) were seventh.

Edison’s Ethan Pappas (170) and River Pappas (220) and Indian Creek’s Mitch Wukelic (145) and Devin Eakle (152) also won their weight classes.

Kuneff was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler.
