Range grad had quite the career

GENEVA — Tim Nichols was as tough to beat at Tufts University (Mass.) as he was at South Range High School.

Nichols wrapped up an All-American career by finishing fifth in the 5,000 meters at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the SPIRE Institute Saturday.

That followed a fourth-place finish in the 10,000 meters in 30 minutes, 17.31 seconds on Thursday. He was one of seven runners who broke the stadium record.

Nichols was back at it Saturday in the 5,000 meters, placing fifth in 14:29.19.

His senior season had included a national indoor championship in the 5,000 meters in March and a third-place finish in the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships last fall.

Nichols, a 2013 graduate of South Range High School, finished his college career as a six-time All-American.

As a junior, he as sixth in the outdoor 10,000 meters and placed 19th in cross country as a junior.

Tufts finished 16th in the men’s team standings with 16 points.

Wisconsin-LaCrosse won its third straight outdoor national title and 15th overall with 47 points. The Eagles also won the indoor national title in March.

Wisconsin-Whitewater was second with 45 points and Mount Union third with 29 points.

Mount Union won the men’s 1600-meter relay for the third year in a row in dramatic fashion.

Freshman AJ Digby made up three places in the final lap to give the Purple Raiders the win in a stadium-record time of 3:10.41. Digby was joined by Tyler Neff, James Roth and Clark Etzler.

The Mount Union women won the 400-meter relay for the first time in school history Saturday.

Former Alliance High School standout Daijana Johnson joined Rachael Adams, Katie Goedecke and Marisa Rinaldi on the winning team that ran a school-record 46.45.

Wisconsin-LaCrosse hosts the 2018 NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships before returning to SPIRE in 2019, hosted again by Mount Union and the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission.
