Gates, Feicht resign posts

COLUMBIANA — Crestview lost two varsity basketball coaches and gained one at a special Crestview Board of Education meeting on Saturday morning.

The board accepted the resignations of girls basketball coach Rick Gates and newly appointed boys basketball coach Joel Feicht.

Feicht, hired on Tuesday, cited personal reasons for his departure. The board quickly approved Austintown Fitch junior varsity boys basketball coach Jeffrey Wilson to replace Feicht. Superintendent Matthew Manley said the board voted unanimously to accept the resignation.

Wilson, a 1993 Cardinal Mooney High School graduate, has served as an eighth grade social studies teacher at Austintown Local schools since 1998. He had been the Falcons jayvee coach since 2014. While also at Austintown Wilson has been a middle school athletic director, 7th grade boys basketball coach, assistant girls varsity coach and a 7th and 8th girls basketball coach.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in education from Youngstown State University and a master’s in education from Westminster. He and his wife Jenn have a 7-month-old boy Patrick.

Gates was 107-80 in eight seasons as the Rebel girls coach. He had previously served 17 seasons as the Crestview boys varsity coach going 206-166 in that span. His overall career record is 313-246.

Manley said Gates has accepted an assistant coaching position at Geneva College but will stay on until mid-June to help ready the program for the Crestview girls basketball summer camp.
