Honorary coaches

LISBON — Four former area basketball standouts will serve as honorary coaches at the 32nd annual Columbiana County Classic at Lisbon High School on Tuesday.

Crestview graduate Katie (Kibby) Dickey, East Palestine graduate Samantha DiCello and Columbiana graduates Jon and Rachel (Spaite) Stoy are the honorees.

Longtime game supporter Lou Pezzano of Lisbon will present the game ball to officials.

The girls game will tip off at 6 p.m., followed by the boys game featuring the county’s top senior basketball players. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students.

Clippers seek soccer coach

COLUMBIANA –Columbiana High School is seeking a varsity girls soccer coach for the 2017 season. Interested candidates should submit a letter of interest and resume to Erin Heasley, Athletic Director, Columbiana Schools, 700 Columbiana-Waterford Road, Columbiana, OH 44408 or erin. heasley@columbianaschools.org. The deadline to apply is April 3.

Clippers will play at PNC Park

COLUMBIANA — The Columbiana baseball team is getting a chance to play in a big league park.

In coordination with the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Clippers will take on Seneca Valley at 2:30 p.m. April 30 at PNC Park. To make the experience possible, the Clippers are asking people interested to support Columbiana Nights at PNC Park. The team is selling tickets for Pittsburgh Pirate games against the Miami Marlins on June 8 and Chicago Cubs on June 18.

Tickets for the June 8 game are $18 and tickets for the June 18 game are $21. Tickets can be purchased by contacting Coach Wolf at ryan.wolf@columbiana schools.org or contacting the high school athletic office. The deadline to purchase tickets is April 1. Ashland wins national title

COLUMBUS — The Ashland University women’s basketball team won its second NCAA Division II national championship in five years with a 93-77 win over Virginia Union in front of 2,000 fans at Alumni Hall on Friday night.

The Eagles became the first Division II women’s basketball team to finish a season with a 37-0 record.

Five Eagles scored in double figures with freshman guard Jodi Johnson getting 19 points, junior forward Laina Snyder 17, sophomore guard Maddie Dackin 14, senior guared Kesley Peare 13 and junior forward Andi Daugherty 13. Freshman Sara Loomis from Malvern played the final minute.

Johnson led Wadsworth High School to the large-school state title last season.

Snyder was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player, while Daugherty earned a spot on the all-tournament team.

It was Ashland’s third trip to the title game in six seasons. The Eagles also won the title in 2013.

Oak Glen drops home opener

NEW MANCHESTER, W.Va–The Oak Glen softball team dropped its home opener Thursday against University by a score of 8-3 in eight innings. Alyssa Creese and Hanna Patterson each had two singles for the Golden Bears. Hannah Clunk struck out 13 while taking the loss. University broke the game open with five runs in the eighth.

Two-day golf tournament set

CALCUTTA — Team Mojo Foundation will be hosting The Mojo Open, a two-day 36-hole individual competitive golf tournament on July 22-23 at Beaver Creek Meadows Golf Course. Entry fee is $100. Online registration and more details are available at teammojofoundation.org. All proceeds are to benefit underprivileged children in the local Tri-State area.

Umpires will meet

YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown Metro Umpire Association will hold softball and baseball meetings on Sunday at Zion Lutheran Church. The softball meeting will begin at 1 p.m. with baseball set for 2:15 p.m. Umpires must attend four meetings to meet state requirements.
