Clark at top of United’s list

Morning Journal/Patti Schaeffer United's Jake Clark (3) celebrates making a new school points record with teammate Parker Hydrick (4) Friday.

HANOVERTON — United senior Jake Clark wasn’t going to stop once he became the Golden Eagles’ all-time leading scorer.

Clark scored a career-high 36 points on a record-setting night as United raced past East Palestine, 91-62, Friday night.

He scored 25 points in the first half, including a three-pointer with 1:57 to play in the second quarter that pushed him past school career scoring mark set of 1,284 points set by Scott Gobely (Class of 1989).

“It was our homecoming game and our side was filled up. It was nice we got it home,” United coach Chris Kadvan said. ” Jake opened the game with hree threes and had 12 points quickly.”

The game was stopped to recognize the feat.

“Jake set the goal when he was young,” Kadvan said. “He dreams big. That’s a testament to him. He’s willing to put in the work and deserves the record.

“He doesn’t just put in time during our basketball practice, he does a lot of work afterwards. He showed his hard work paid off.”

Clark — who is trying to be United’s leading scorer a fourth straight season — got a lot of help Friday as the Eagles scored a season-high 91 points.

Kaden Smith contributed 18 points on 10-for-10 free throw shooting. Alex Birtalan added 11 points, Parker Hydrick 10 and Landon Baker had seven points off the bench.

United improves to 9-7 overall and 3-3 in the Inter-Tri County League Red Division.

“It’s a great victory,” Kadvan said. “We’ve got nine wins and already matched our total from the regular season from last year. It’s exciting to score 91 points. It was a great atmosphere.”

Both teams play Tuesday as United travels to Springfield and East Palestine hosts Crestview.
