VOLLEYBALL: Quakers ‘welcome’ back Conser

SALEM – United volleyball coach Don Conser won a lot of matches as coach of Salem on the Cabas Gymnasium floor.

On his return to Salem High School’s gym on Wednesday, the Quakers welcomed him back with a hard-fought 23-25, 25-18, 26-24, 22-25, 15-5 win.

Salem coach Allie Winner, a 2004 Salem High School graduate, played and coached under Conser during his Quaker career which spanned 34 seasons and ended in 2011.

“It was definitely a different situation,” Winner said. “The girls wanted to win knowing he was out there. I think it meant more for me though because I played and coached under him.”

Conser said he had weird feelings walking into the gym.

“It reminded me of the first time I walked into the United gym when I was a coach at Salem,” Conser said. “Being a graduate of United, I had only rooted for them up until that point. It was the same feeling tonight.”

He totaled 638 wins, 26 straight league titles and two state semifinal appearances in his career at Salem, but it seemed like business as usual against the Quakers.

“I think he was his typical self,” Winner said. “He played it cool.”

Conser said it was interesting playing against Salem and the girls were motivated to get their first win of the season.

“I think they were all ready to play,” Conser said. “They wanted a crack at Salem because of how good (Salem) is supposed to be this year.”

For the Quakers (2-1), Maria Shivers had 16 kills and six blocks; Kasey Costal 11 kills; Alyssa Pallo 12 digs, two aces and Kelly Barley 50 assists, two aces.

For United (0-3), Claudia Rockhold had four aces, 12 kills and two blocks; Shelby Mix had thre aces, eight kills and two blocks; Mariah Eisenbraun three kills, eight kills and Shanna Miller 17 assists, two kills and two blocks.
