Scullion tops area runners
YOUNGSTOWN – Salem High School graduate Aiman Scullion, 27, finished second overall at the Panerathon 10K race on Sunday.
Scullion finished the 6.1-mile race through Youngstown in 31 minutes, 0.6 seconds. He ran on Salem’s Division II state championship cross country teams in 2004 and 2005.
Abraham Chelolnga, 31, was first overall (30:01.9).
Leetonia High School graduate Doug Votaw, 27, was 11th overall (34:49.8) and second in his 25-29 age group.
Former area standouts Stephanie Case, 23, of Columbiana, and Kayla (Witmer) Aluise, 25, of North Lima, were fifth and sixth among women’s runners.
Case ran 38:38.7, while Aluise ran 38:48.1 to take first in the women’s 25-29 age group. Case finished 25th overall and Aluise 27th.
There were 1,181 finishers in the 10K race and more than 10,000 participants including the 2-mile walk.
Proceeds benefit the Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Youngstown.
Suburban League opens
EAST PALESTINE – The Suburban League cross country season opens this afternoon with races hosted by East Palestine, Austintown Fitch and McDonald.
East Palestine City Park will entertain Beaver Local, Canfield, Columbiana, East Liverpool, Leetonia, Lisbon, Poland, Salem, Southern Local, South Range, Springfield, Struthers, United, Youngstown Mooney and host East Palestine.
The varsity boys race will start at 4:30 p.m., followed by the varsity girls at 5:05 p.m. and then middle school boys and girls races.
