Two new coaches take field at Minerva

MINERVA – The Minerva High School baseball and softball programs are off to a new start.

At Monday’s board of education meeting, Rocky Bourquin was named the new baseball head coach, while former Minerva standout Meghan Simons Kishman was hired as the new softball head coach.

Bourquin, a graduate of Canton South High School and Malone University, had a 30-year career as a teacher, coach and administrator at Canton South before retiring in 2012.

He was a four-year letterwinner at Malone for coach Bob Starcher. In 1995, he was selected to the Malone Hall of Fame.

Bourquin was a baseball coach at Canton South for 15 years, including 10 as head coach with a career record of 161-82, including three Northeastern Buckeye Conference championships, three NBC coach of the year awards and four district final appearances.

He also played in the Canton Class A League for 15 years and was inducted into the Stark County Amateur Hall of Fame in 1998.

Bourquin went on to play in the Senior Baseball League for Wood Electric, which had a 77-game winning streak. He was elected into the Tuscarawas County Baseball Hall of Fame in 2010.

Meghan Simons Kishman earned eight varsity letters at Minerva in basketball and softball. She was first-team NBC in both sports all four years and first-team All-Ohio in softball in 2006. She led Minerva to district titles in softball (2004 and 2006) and basketball (2006).

She played college softball at Mount Union and was named to the All-Ohio Athletic Conference first team all four years. In 2010, she was named a National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-American.

After graduation, she was a member of the Mount Union softball coaching staff ro three years when the Purple Raiders won an OAC championship. She was selected into the Minerva Athletic Hall of Fame in 2013.

Bourquin replaces Carl Michael, who had been the baseball head coach for 19 years. Kishman replaces Katie Hannen, who was the softball coach for five years.

Both teams reached the Division II district championship game this past season.
