TRACK: Fillman, English leap to district titles

CORTLAND – United had a record-setting debut at the Lakeview Division II district track meet Thursday.

Junior Riley Fillmen won the long jump with a meet-record 22-feet-2 1/2 to advance to regionals. He broke the mark of 21-11 1/2 set by Pymatuning Valley’s Quintin Ratliff in 2012.

Finishing second behind Fillman was Youngstown Mooney senior Marcus Penza at 20-5.

Fillman also posted the top time in the preliminaries in the 300-meter hurdles (42.35) and 400 relay (43.84). He was a state qualifier in all three last year.

The top four in each event advance to the Austintown Fitch regional next week.

Fillman will be joined at regionals by junior Luke Cooper, who was third in the discus (146-9), and the girls 3200 relay team.

Senior Allison Parks, junior Maggie Briceland, sophomore Hunter Urmson and freshman Brynn Hofmeister finished second in the 3200 relay in a season-best 10:28.93. Crestwood won in 10:05.48.

Parks also posted the top time in the 800 run (2:31.13), while Briceland was seventh fastest (2:38.91).

The United boys 3200 relay team missed a regional berth by placing fifth. James Kataro, Jacob Wolni, Joseph Kataro and Andrew Williams ran an 8:52.29, coming up short by eight seconds.

Placing for the United girls were senior Caitlin Palmer, seventh in the shot put (30-8 1/4) and sophomore Emily Ellyson, who tied for seventh in the high jump (4-8).

The remainder of the district finals will continue at 10 a.m. Saturday at Lakeview High School.

United sophomore Alex Phillips had the top time in the 100 dash (11.20) along with the 400 relay and also ran on the 800 relay team that was third fastest (1:33.75).

Other Eagles who qualified for Saturday’s finals were Tyler Powers, third in the 200 dash (23.18); Josh Welcome, fourth in the 400 dash (53.27) and eighth in the 200 dash (23.95); James Kataro fourth in the 800 run (2:19.15); and Andrew Williams 13th in the 800 run (2:22:98).

The United girls advances Angela Judy and Amanda DeRuyter in the 100 hurdles. Judy was seventh fastest (16.98) and Amanda DeRuyter eighth fastest (17.60).

Two Potters advance

MILLERSBURG – East Liverpool’s Zack English got off to a flying start in districts with a 21-foot leap to win the long jump on Thursday at the Division II district track meet at West Holmes High School.

East Liverpool’s Leighanna Frantz also booked a spot in next week’s regionals at Muskingum by clearing 4-10 to tie for third in the high jump. Indian Valley’s Brie Schwab won that event by clearling 4-10 1/4.

Beaver Local and Minerva’s track and field teams are also competing in this meet which concludes on Saturday. Field events are slated to start at 10 a.m. with running finals going off at 11 a.m.

West Holmes leads the girls team scoring with 33 points, while Carrollton boys scored 31 points.
