Eagles fly high at Optimist

AUSTINTOWN – United’s Allison Parks and Riley Fillman like to stay busy on the weekends.

After capturing victories at the Tusky Valley Invitational on Friday, both Eagles earned high finishes Saturday at the 34th annual Optimist Track and Field Meet.

Parks, a senior, won the girls 800-meter run with a personal-best time of 2 minutes, 21.14 seconds at Falcon Stadium. She edged out Independence senior Deanna Gesicki, who finished in 2:21.25. Gesicki was third in the in the 400 dash at the Division III state meet last year.

Fillman, a junior, took third in the boys high jump with a leap of 21-feet-0 1/4.

Salem had two boys relays teams with high places.

The Quakers’ 1600-meter relay team of Daniel Rumsey, Marcus Crittenden, Ethan Bailey, Cameron Turney took second (3:29.74), while the 800-meter relay team of Haedan Panezott, Crittenden, Turney and Rumsey took third (1:32.07).

South Range sophomore Mollie Pierson also placed in two events. Pierson was third in the girls 1600 run (5:35.25) and sixth in the 3200 run (11:50.62) and

South Range senior Raianne Mason was third in the girls 300 hurdles (47.34), one spot ahead of Louisville sophomore Devin Kring (48.46).

South Range freshman Xena Maali was sixth in the girls1600 run (5:38.07).

Salem junior Alyssa Wright, who set a school record Tuesday, placed fifth in the girls discus (128-feet-7). McDonald teammates Jail’Lyn Mosley was first (157-6) and Tory Ross was third (141-6).

Solon swept the boys and girls team titles.

The Solon boys won with 72 1/2 points. Lakewood St. Edwarde was second with 57 and host Austintown Fitch third with 46. Salem tied for 19th with 14 points and United tied for 26th with six points.

Solon’s girls, the defending Division I state champions, won Saturday with 120 points. Warren Harding was second with 62 and Twinsburg third with 51. South Range topped local teams by tying for 11th place with 18 points. United tied for 19th with 10 points and Salem was 29th with four points.
