Shivers rules Optimist

AUSTINTOWN – Salem senior Anthony Shivers had his best day ever against the best discus throwers in Ohio.

Shivers broke his own school and Columbiana County records with a winning toss of 198-feet-1 in winning the star-studded field at the 33rd annual Optimist Track and Field Meet at Falcon Stadium on Saturday.

“He came in and was excited because the top three throwers in the state were there,” Salem coach Todd Huda said. “He knew he had to have a good day.”

Shivers, the defending Division II state champion, beat out Lakewood St. Edward senior Aaron Zedella (185-7) and Austintown Fitch senior Billy Price, a prized Ohio State football recruit who was third (180-6).

Shivers had three throws over 191 feet in the preliminaries, including his 198-1 that currently ranks third in the country among high school boys. Zedella, an Ohio State track recruit, placed third in the boys discus at the Penn Relays last weekend.

In the finals, Shivers opened with a 188-footer and a 175-footer as no one was able to catch him.

Shivers also broke the meet record of 192-7 set in 1995 by Gates Mills Hawken’s Larry Wilson, a two-time Division III state champion.

South Range senior Jon Kenney placed seventh with a personal-best 153-2.

South Range senior Andrew O’Leary also had a record-setting run Saturday. He was third in the 400-meter dash in 48.93 seconds, breaking his own school record in posting the fastest time in the area since 2003.

O’Leary also teamed with Cole Krumpak, Adam Meloy and Jake Arsuffi on the fourth-place 1600 relay team (3:33.24) and Adam Meloy, Joe Alessi and Jake Arsuffi on the seventh-place 800 relay team (1:33.51).

Also for the Raiders, senior Jake Arsuffi was third in the long jump (20-10 1/2) and senior Tim Nichols was fourth in the 3200 run (9:42.57).

Canfield’s Treavor English, Bryan Kristan, Chase Kern and Alec Kennedy were seventh in the 3200 relay (8:33.31).

Topping area girls were Columbiana junior Addie Dunlap, who second in the discus (121-9).

Other area girls placers were South Range junior Rainne Mason, sixth in the 300 hurdles (49.99); South Range freshman Mollie Pierson, seventh in the 3200 run (11:52.23); East Palestine senior Chloe Snyder, tied for seventh in the high jump (5-0); and South Range’s Sierra Petrella, Elaina Kimpel, Kameron Hobbs and Rainanne Mason, eighth in the 1600 relay (4:24.57).

For Canfield, senior Emma Lunne was second in the 3200 run (11:17.32); Bailey Fischer, Devin Foley, Emma Lunne and Jamie Watt were third in the 3200 relay (10:03.06); senior Kayla Barko was sixth in the high jump (5-2); and senior Stephanie Carrocce was seventh in the 100 dash (12.97).

Austintown Fitch topped the girls teams with 63 points, followed by Stow-Munroe Falls with 52 1/2 and Green with 50. Canfield was 11th with 22 points. Columbinana was 28th with eight, South Range 28th with six and East Palestine 32nd with 3/4.

Lakewood St. Edward won the boys team title with 63 points. Austintown Fitch was second with 70 and Cleveland Glenville third with 55. South Range placed eighth with 26, Salem was 22nd with 10 and Canfield was 33rd with two.
