SALEM - The 21st annual Star Trax 5K Night Run will be dedicated to Lois A. and Nick Peters, who volunteered at the run and provided financial support for many years.
The couple will be honored before the run begins at 9 p.m. Aug. 2 in Reilly Stadium.
The Peters' were corporate officers of Hickey Metal Fabrication, a family owned and operated manufacturing company in Salem, prior to an auto accident in June 2013 while they were on vacation in Virginia. Lois died on July 7, 2013, from injuries she sustained; Nick continues to recover from his injuries.
Star Trax co-chairman Ted Marroulis said Mr. and Mrs. Peters helped with traffic control since their son, Nick, was a runner at Salem High School in the 1990s. They were also financial sponsors for nearly 20 years.
The race is the primary fundraiser of the X-tra Mile Club, which is the booster organization for the Salem High School track and cross country teams.
Last year, 827 runners completed in the 3.1-mile night run that winds through luminary-lit neighborhoods near Centennial Park and ends back at Reilly Stadium along East Pershing Street.
Marroulis said the 2013 run "was phenomenal. The biggest yet." He's hoping for a similar turnout this year. Star Trax raises money for the Salem High School track and cross country teams.
The cost to enter is $17, if registration is received by Saturday. Mail checks to Salem X-TRA Mile Club, Inc., P.O. Box, 122, Salem OH 44460, or register online at www.gopherarun. com/races/2014-star-trax-5k.html.
Runners may also register the evening of the event at Reilly Stadium beginning at 7 p.m.
