Sebring, OH - Ellen K. Wilhelm, 93, formerly of the New Waterford and East Palestine area, died at 3:48 p.m. Friday, July 11, 2014 at the Crandall Medical Center.
Mrs. Wilhelm was born December 26, 1920 in Houston, Texas, a daughter of Hu and Noni Thompson Huffmaster.
Ellen graduated in 1938 from San Jacinto High School in Texas and graduated from Julliard School of Music, New York City in 1942 where she met her husband, Howard. She graduated from Youngstown State University in 1969 and went on to teach music for Crestview School District for 20 years.
She was a member of the Centenary United Methodist Church where she served as choir director for 33 years for four choirs: Children's, Youth, Adult, and a community chorus that sang "The Messiah". The Youngstown Playhouse also benefited from Ellen's musical expertise and beautiful voice. She participated in several plays at the Playhouse as well as serving as president of the Youngstown Playhouse Women's Guild.
She was a member of the United Methodist Women's Guild, the Alpha Eta Study Club and the East Palestine County Club where she enjoyed golfing with her husband. She had also taught ballet and synchronized swimming in East Palestine.
She enjoyed animals and in her retirement years traveling with her husband throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe.
Mrs. Wilhelm is survived by two daughters, Geraldine (David) Guy of East Palestine and Katherine (Gary) Doyle of Conneaut; eight grandchildren, Erich (Sara) Guy, Kari (Matt) Lohrman, B.J. Doyle, K.D. (Mike) Meucci, Molly (Eric) Doyle, Dawn Waller, Gwyn Waller and Fay Waller; and seven great grandchildren.
Ellen was preceded in death on December 3, 2012 by her husband, Howard W. Wilhelm, whom she married July 8, 1943; a daughter, Virginia Waller; and two sisters, Drusilla Anderson and Ruth Fox.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, July 20, 2014 at the Van Dyke-Swaney-Rettig Funeral Home with the Reverend Donald Pentz officiating. Burial will follow in Glenview Cemetery. Friends may call one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.
