HANOVERTON - Two campers are recovering following an accident Saturday night at Guilford Lake State Park in which they were pulled from the lake by rescue crews.
According to initial reports from the park ranger, the two men were swimming at the beach near the park's campground off Teegarden Road after 9 p.m., when one man became unresponsive.
The other man swam out in an attempt to pull him to safety, but he also ran into difficulty and he, too, lost consciousness. Nearby campers spotted the two men in trouble and alerted authorities.
Emergency personnel used a boat to reach the men and they were both pulled from the water around 9:45 p.m.
Park Ranger Andrew Gatto said the department is further investigating the matter, but said they were part of a group camping at the park and were swimming nearby.
"Apparently they just swam out," Gatto said. "I don't know if they cramped up, or if they got exhausted. That we are still trying to figure out."
One of the men, a 19-year-old, reportedly refused medical treatment while the other was taken to the hospital. Both men are expected to make a full recovery. Their names have not been released.
The Lisbon post of the State Highway Patrol, Hanover Township fire crews and KLG Ambulance also assisted at the scene.
