LISBON - John W. "Jack" Confer, of Leslie Road in Lisbon, passed away following a lingering illness at the age of 81 on Wednesday, June 25, 2014 at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Boardman.
He was born June 2, 1933 in Bethesda, Maryland and raised just outside Washington, D.C. He served as an engineer in the U.S. Army, building bridges in Alaska prior to moving to this area in 1972.
For many years, he was an independent truck driver and had also worked for Paper Service Inc. in Lisbon. Jack had also been associated with the Columbiana County Road Department, retiring after ten years of service. In recent years, he enjoyed following his grandson, Josh, in motocross racing.
Surviving him is his wife, Doris A. Martin Confer, whom he married August 2, 1972.
Jack also leaves behind a son, Elmer Barrow of Lisbon, and a daughter, Mary Parker of East Palestine. There are four grandchildren: Ciara, Kaylyn and Michael Parker, and Josh Barrow.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law, Carol Barrow, who died May 21, 2012.
Friends may visit at the Dawson Funeral Home on Tuesday, where the family will be present from 3 to 6 p.m.
Pastor Norm Eckert of Beechwood Free Methodist Church will officiate at a service at the funeral home Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. Burial will take place at Columbiana County Memorial Park.
