EAST LIVERPOOL - Roof repairs will begin this summer at Westgate School after the city school board Monday night awarded a $521,200 contract to a Twinsburg firm for the work.
The board voted 4-1, with Brian Allen opposed, to hire Campopiano Roofing for the rehabilitation project.
The other bidder was Mansuetto Roofing, which bid $580,400.
Brett Hendricks of BSHM Architects spoke to the board about the project, saying he had reviewed the bid works and alternates and that Campopiano's bid was within the parameter of the architect's $500,000 estimate.
Hendricks also told the board the alternates were bid in unit prices in the event of any concealed problems.
Board members said they wanted apprised of any such problems as they arise so they can determine how to proceed financially.
Although the beginning date is not yet known, construction will start on the western portion of the building near Patterson Field and proceed east through the building toward the administrative wing.
Although saying he "fully supports" the repair project, Allen said after the meeting he opposed the contract because he felt the contractor was unable to adequately provide him with a worst-case scenario cost.
He said that, combining that with issues surrounding the Patterson Field improvement project prior to his election, "this led me to the conclusion that I could not risk the people's money without first knowing the worst-case dollar amount."
He pointed out the district has just $600,000 available for the roofing project.
The board convened in executive session to discuss employment but took no action afterward.
