The village of Wellsville lost a big piece of its heart on Thursday.
Police Chief Joe Scarabino lost his battle with cancer, leaving the town to mourn his passing and mark his legacy.
Joe wasn't just the police chief, he was Wellsville. His life embodied the heart and soul of everything good about this small town.
A gifted athlete in high school, Joe was just an all-around nice kid who never knew a stranger. His friendly personality and ways stayed with him as he grew into a true gentleman as an adult.
He began his police career with the village in 1980 and worked his way through the ranks into the chief's position, serving with a firm, but fair, hand.
This same fairness extended to his relationship with the media. He was always accessible and understood that news personnel also had an important job to do.
He touched many lives in Wellsville and left a positive stamp on the town's history. A new chief will be named, but Joe will never be replaced.
RIP Joe, you will be missed.
