EAST LIVERPOOL - Natural gas leasing company DPS Penn has closed its East End office, which opened in 2010 and served as a base for the company's leasing operations in Columbiana County.
DPS refers to Dale Property Services Penn and is a privately held company focused on the development of of natural resources in western Pennsylvania and portions of Ohio. The company has been leasing gas and oil rights in Columbiana, Jefferson and Harrison counties in Ohio as well Allegheny, Armstrong, Greene and Westmoreland counties in Pennsylvania.
City Safety-Service Director Ryan Estell said Thursday that city officials understood from the outset that DPS Penn did not intend to stay in the city permanently. He notes DPS had planned on spending only two years in the city but ended up spending more than four years here.
"We were thrilled to keep them longer than their original plan was," said Estell. "It's unfortunate when any business leaves town, but the nature of their industry is that they're going to move where the leasing is occurring and this is a fairly saturated market at this point for the leasing."
During its stay, DPS Penn donated to several area community events and causes. In 2011, in fact, the company provided the city with a sizable monetary donation toward the patching of problem potholes along well-traveled Pennsylvania Avenue.
Estell says the space that DPS Penn operated out of would be ideal for just about any industry. The facility, which is part of the privately owned River City Plaza, also houses Team Impact, a popular community/fitness center.
"That's a great location and a great building," said Estell.
In addition to Team Impact, the plaza also has a laundry mat, a tattoo business and a newly opened secondhand variety store.
Officials with DPS Penn did not return phone messages left Thursday seeking information about the closure.
