EAST PALESTINE - West Branch junior Jake Zinni won the discus to highlight area athletes at the 45th annual William E. Ward Boys Invitational at Reid Stadium on Saturday.
Zinni was first in the discus (149-feet-2) and fouth in the shot put (49-7 1/2) as the field events MVP.
Other area winners were West Branch junior Zach Robbins in the high jump (6-2) and East Liverpool senior Zack English in the long jump (19-11 1/2).
Austintown Fitch repeated as the team champion with 125 points, followed by Hudson with 78, Poland 57, Warren Harding 45 and West Branch and Massillon Perry with 39.
Joining Zinni and Robbins as event placers for West Branch were Josiah Ross, fifrth in the 300-meter hurdles; Andrew Filp, fifth in the shot put; and the 800 relay team of Ross, Ethan Griffith, Cody Park and Hunter Nielson.
Other area placers included East Liverpool's Shae Long, second in the high jump and sixth in the 300 hurdles; East Palestine's Nick Monteleone, third in the 100 dash, sixth in the long jump and seventh in the high jump; Springfield's Randy Groves, third in the 400 dash; Springfield's Brian Swansiger, seventh in the discus; East Palestine's Josh Pickett, seventh in the 100 dash; East Liverpool's Chase McMahon, eighth in the 400 dash; and the Beaver Local 1600 relay and 3200 relay teams were eighth.
Canfield sophomore Chase Kern was the running events MVP as he was first in the 800 (2:06.72), second in the 1600 (4:37.43) and fourth in the 3200 (10:23.31).
