New Waterford - Anthony Edward Rubino, Sr., 84, of New Waterford, died at 8:11 a.m. Sunday, March 30, 2014 at Hospice House, Poland.
Anthony was born March 30, 1930 in Youngstown, the son of the late Eugene and Angeline Perno Rubino. He was a 1948 graduate of North High School and had served in the signal corps in the U.S. Army during Korea.
He was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church, Columbiana; the Rosary Cenacle of the church and had served on parish council. He also served as sacristan, lector, Eucharistic minister, usher, greeter, and reader. He was a founder of the St. Jude Men's Club where he served the first 2 years as president.
He was a member of SNPJ Lodge #770, Golden Eagles of Smokey Hollow, Model Airplane Club of Youngstown where he built and flew model planes; and East Side Kiwanis Club of Youngstown since 1965 where he served as past president and secretary.
He had been employed as control office manager for 30 years for Ohio Bell, retiring in 1985. Following retirement he was a grounds keeper at Tippecanoe Country Club for 8 years and he had also owned and operated Rubino's Sausage & Deli in Liberty Township where he was known for his Italian hot sausage; and also Blue Grass Lawn & Turf Maintenance. He had also owned and operated a 60 acre farm near East Palestine. He was instrumental in building and operating Rubino's Par 3 Golf Course in Coitsville for 13 years.
Anthony enjoyed building and flying RC model airplanes, horseback riding and played the Slovenian button box accordion. He was a prolific dancer, especially enjoying Slovenian polkas and waltzes and loved the big band era as well as ballads by the classic Italian tenors. He loved to cook and enjoyed life on his farm. He enjoyed the companionship of his dogs, Molly, C'Ci, and Ava. He will be remembered for his deep faith and commitment to the church and his sense of humor and goodwill.
He is survived by his wife, the former Judith A. Gaver whom he married September 15, 1990; three daughters, Cheryl "Shari" M. Rubino of Warren, Joanie A. (David) Lewis of Poland and Melissa A. Taylor of Boardman; three sons, Anthony E. (Sherry) Rubino, Jr. of East Palestine, David A. Taylor and Michael B. Taylor both of New Waterford; two step daughters, Anne M. (Tom Torkelson) Taylor of Golden Valley, MN and Christine M. (Daehn) Steffen of Roswell, GA; two sisters, Dorothy J. Leone and Mary Theresa Kuti both of Coitsville; a brother, Raymond J. Rubino of Coitsville, his former wife, Joan A. Rubino of East Palestine; 11 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Elizabeth J. Rubino; three infant sons; a step son, Jeffrey L. Henry; a sister, Teresa Rubino and two brothers, Eugene J. and Carmen M. Rubino.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, April 3, 2014 at St. Jude Catholic Church, Columbiana. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Youngstown.
Friends may call at the Warrick-Kummer-Rettig Funeral Home, Columbiana from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday where a Chaplet of Divine Mercy will be said at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Memorial Fund.
