NEWELL - James J. Thompson, 70, of Newell lost his battle to cancer on 03/18/2014, at home surrounded by his family.
Born Aug. 19, 1943, in Johnstown, PA, he was the son of the late William and Alma (Weimer) Thompson.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his three brothers William "Ed" Thompson, Claude Thompson, Clyde Thompson and his sister Pamela Watts.
He is survived by his wife Susan R. (Barefoot) Thompson, whom he married March 20, 1965; a son, Curtis Thompson of Newell; a daughter, Amy (Bucky) Richmond of Newell; a daughter, Angie (Charlie) Taylor of East Liverpool; four grandchildren, Austin Taylor, Alessia Richmond, Trenton Richmond, Chloe Thompson; and a brother, Raymond Thompson of Johnstown, PA.
J.J. was a graduate of Johnstown High School Class of 1963 when he moved to Newell to become a Jockey at Waterford Park Racetrack N/K/A Mountaineer Racetrack. Following a career ending injury in 1987, he was employed at Milligan Hardware in the Pipe Shop and also worked briefly at Homer Laughlin China Co.
He was an honorary life-time member of the PTA, involved with The Newell Youth Baseball League as a Commissioner and a Coach. He was a member and former officer of the Newell Lions and a member of the Newell Community Improvement Coalition. He was a member of the Hancock County Arts Council and The First United Methodist Church of Chester. He was a self-taught handyman who always lent a helping hand to whomever asked. He was a Father of three but father-figure to many.
Dedicated to his family, friends, and community and was a very dear and special man to everybody in his life.
Visitation will be Thursday, 6pm-8pm. Friday 2pm-4pm, 6pm-8pm. Funeral service will be Saturday 11am, at the Nixon Funeral Home in Newell.
Internment will be at Shadow Lawn Memory Gardens, Newell.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to The Newell Lions Club, The Newell Community Improvement Coalition (906 Grant St., Newell, WV), or the Lynn Murray Memorial Library.
