Area wrestlers look sharp

COLUMBUS - West Branch senior Logan Sharp did his family proud on the opening day of the 77th annual state wrestling tournament.

Sharp opened with a win in the Division II 285-pound class with a 1-0 decision over Franklin senior Chase Henderson to highlight five area wrestlers still in the title hunt.

Henderson defeated Sharp's older brother, Conner, twice in tiebreakers at the state meet last year, including a 2-1 win over the elder Sharp in the third-place match.

Sharp (32-3) will take on Warsaw River View senior Joshua Kempf today.

Other area wrestlers still in the championship bracket are Beaver Local junior Daniel Hasson, Wellsville junior Seth Bloor, Minerva senior Harrison Hoppel and Minerva junior Dalton Hartshorn.

East Liverpool junior Alex Potts and Minerva senior Josiah Hrusch both won consolation matches to remain alive.

Action resumes at 10 a.m. today at the Schottenstein Center with the championship quarterfinals.

Hasson (42-4) opened with a 6-5 decision over Wilimington senior Zach Johnson in Division II 138-pound action. Hasson will take on Josh Mossing, a junior from Toledo Central Catholic, today.

Bloor (36-4) won his Division III 220-pound opener by default over Gahanna Academy junior Dan Jones, who entered the meet with a 28-1 record. Bloor will meet Greenwich S. Central sophomore Cameron Conaway (44-1) in the next round.

Hoppel (41-5), who was fifth at state last year, pinned Pomeroy Meigs junior Dayleen Neece in 1:27 in Division II 220-pound action. Hoppel advances to meet Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary junior Dre'k Brumley.

Hartshorn, Minerva's other returning state qualifier, won by a 3-2 decision over Kenton Ridge junior Tyler Sowards in Division II 145-pound action. In the next round, Hartshorn takes on Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy junior Andy Dobben, who was seventh at 132 pounds last year.

In the Division II 106-pound action, Potts (41-4) dropped an 8-2 decision to Toledo Central Catholic sophomore Josh Venia at 106 pounds and then decisioned Perry sophomore Brady Toth, 5-2, in a consolation opener.

Hrusch (35-12) was pinned by Napolean sophomore Seth Beard in 3:39 in the Division II 113-pound class and then topped Thornville Sheridan junior Nathaniel Kelm by a 7-3 decision.

United junior Charlie Smith, Beaver Local senior Cody Martsolf and West Branch junior Mason Hughes bowed out of the tournament with two losses Thursday.

Smith (28-10), the school's first wrestler to reach the state tournament, lost 4-2 to Dayton Christian senior Nate Jackson and then was pinned by Sugarcreek Garaway senior Ben Sexton in 3:39 in Division III 285-pound action.

Martsolf (37-14) dropped out of Division II 285-pound competition as he was decisioned 7-0 by Toledo Central Catholic junior J'Quan Fisher and then 4-0 by Hamilton Ross senior Gavin Peacock.

Hughes (27-8) opened Division II 160-pound action with a 14-7 loss to Warsaw River View junior Brendan Scherer and was pinned by Toledo Central Catholic junior Lucas Beauch in 4:53.
