Lawrence Ernest Halverstadt, 78, of Salem, Oregon, died January 12, 2014. Larry, son of Perry and Maude Halverstadt, was born in Youngstown OH and raised on a dairy farm outside of Elkton OH.
He and his wife, Beverly Joseph Halverstadt were married in 1957 and raised their family in Lisbon OH.
From 1955-59, Larry served in the US Navy as a gunners mate on a destroyer, after which he worked as a welder/fitter at National Rubber Manufacturing in Leetonia OH until his retirement in 1990. At that time, he and his wife began touring the Southern and Eastern United States as Mr. Rainbow and Sunshine, the Lord's Clowns.
In 2003 they retired from their clown ministry and moved to Oregon. In his later retirement, Larry served as the Seniors Pastor at Church on the Hill in Salem.
Larry was preceded in death by his sister, Shirley Studder and his son, Larry Stewart.
He is survived by his wife, Beverly, and two children, Karen of Salem OR and Mark (Treasel) Halverstadt of Leetonia OH. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren, Lynn (Kory), and Daniel (Tirzah) of Oregon and Tiffany (Jerremy), Christopher and Athena of Ohio, and two great-grandchildren, Kole and Kailah.
A private burial service was held at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland OR.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on February 22, 2014 at noon at The Upper Room Fellowship, in Columbiana.
