CAMERON, W.Va. - When East Liverpool senior Hayden Cunningham arrived back in town Saturday night, he was the Potters' highest scorer ever.
Cunningham scored a school-record 51 points in leading the Potters past Cameron, 97-61.
"It was something special to watch tonight," East Liverpool coach Nate Conley said.
Cunningham broke the school record of 47 points set by Andrew Bobalik against Cleveland East Tech on Jan. 28, 2006.
Cunningham shot 16-of-26 from the field, including 6-of-10 from three-point range, and was 13-of-15 from the foul line.
"It will be a hard record to break," Conley said. "His teammates wanted him to break it as much as he did."
Cunningham scored 30 points in the first half as the Potters built a 56-22 lead. He added five points in the third quarter as the Dragons closed within 66-48.
"It was still a pretty close ball game," Conley said. "We were only up 15 late in the third quarter. Then Hayden caught on fire in the fourth quarter."
Cunningham scored 16 points in the final period as the Potters totaled 31 to pull away.
"We always talk about records," Conley said. "When he started getting close, you could hear it on the bench and from the coaches. What I liked was we stuck to our game plan."
Kade Reynolds added 18 points and Austin Emmerling 11. D.J. Austin dished out 13 assists.
But this night belonged to Cunningham.
"It is something he'll always remember," Conley said.
East Liverpool also won the junior varsity game, 58-33. Joey Bickerton led the Potters with 13 points and Brent Waggle added 11.
The Potters will host Crestview next Saturday.
