Charles Miller

November 28, 2013
Morning Journal News

NORTH LIMA Charles R. Miller, 92, of North Lima, passed away late Tuesday evening, November 26, at Glenellen Senior Living Community.

Charles was born on August 8, 1921 in Youngstown, a son of William R. and Mary E. (Dickenson) Miller. He was a life-long Beaver Township area resident.

He was a graduate of North Lima High School, and served in the Army during World War II.

After returning from the service, Charles married his sweetheart, the former Betty Jean Hyre, on December 17, 1945. Together they would raise seven children. They were anticipating celebrating their 68th anniversary in a few short weeks.

Charles worked for the Youngstown and Southern Railroad for 15 years as a brakeman before moving on to Republic Steel in 1953. He retired from his occupation as motor inspector in 1983. He later joined the Beaver Township Volunteer Fire Department and was a fire inspector for many years. During this time he was always a full time farmer.

Charles loved music. He collected sheet music and violins, and enjoyed getting together with friends and fiddling away to some 1930s hymn books. He belonged to the bell choir at First Friends Quaker Church in Salem, and dreamt of one day learning to play the bagpipes. His true love, however, was farming. He worked the same farm that he raised his family on for over sixty years. He was a member of the Farm Bureau and Extension Service and Sheep and Lamb Organization. He was a leader of the boy scouts and cub scouts and supported 4-H involvement. He became involved in many youth groups at Zion Hill of the Brethern. His interest in history led him to become a member of the Mahoning County Civil War Round Table.

He leaves to cherish his precious memory his wife Betty Jean; two daughters, Dorothy Miller of Youngstown and Karen D. (Robert) Boyce of Frostburg, MD; four sons, Lloyd (Pam Garver) Miller of Greenford, Raymond A. (Angie) Miller of North Lima, Russell Miller of Finland, and Steven (Sandy) Miller of Hermitage, PA; 10 grandchildren, Bill Jones, Sarah Potts, Charlie, Toby, and Katie Miller, Kim Gierescher, Christopher, Elizabeth, Patrick, and Steven Miller; and five great-grandchildren, Brandon Pyatt, Hayden Wood, Emily Fowler, Elias Miller, and Lily Bigley.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents, many good friends, and a son William Miller.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 30 at 11:00 a.m. at First Friends Quaker Church, 1028 Jennings Avenue, Salem with Pastor Peter Fowler officiating.

The family will receive friends on Friday, November 29 at 1-3 p.m. and also 7-9 p.m. at Seederly-Mong and Beck Funeral Home, 11500 Market Street, North Lima.

The Seederly-Mong & Beck Funeral Home in North Lima, Ohio has been entrusted with the arrangements.

If friends desire, material contributions in Charles' name may be made to First Friends Quaker Church, 1028 Jennings Avenue, Salem OH 44420.

Family and friends are invited to visit www.seederly-mongandbeck.com to sign the guestbook or send private condolences.
