October 12, 2013
Morning Journal News

LISBON - Columbiana County has its first new drilling permit application in nearly two months, with one issued for the Sosenko property in Hanover Township.

The applicant is Chesapeake Exploration, and the property is accessible from Speidel and Sanor roads, according to information from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

This brings to 74 the number of separate drilling sites in the county receiving permits since the oil and gas boom began in the region in 2010. Chesapeake remains the major player, holding 62 of the permits.

A total of 86 well permits have been issued for the 74 drilling sites, about half of which have been drilled. Eight wells are currently producing - four in West Township, two in Franklin Township and one each in Knox and Hanover townships.

The following is a list of drilling sites by township: Butler, 5; Center, 5; Elkrun, 7; Fairfield, 6; Franklin, 9; Hanover, 13; Knox, 4; Madison, 2; Middleton, 5; Salem, 6; Unity, 3; Washington, 4; Wayne, 1; West, 2; and Yellow Creek, 2.

No permits have been sought or issued yet for Liverpool, St. Clair or Perry townships.
