Alice Arehart

DAMASCUS - Alice Emily Dawson Arehart, 91, died Tuesday, September 24, 2013, at Auburn Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation.

She had resided previously in Rogers, Ohio, and New Cumberland and New Manchester, W.Va.

She was born March 26, 1922, in Dayton, Ky., the daughter of Charles and Ella Kuyper Dawson.

A 1939 graduate of Dayton High School, she had worked as a bookkeeper at several banks, was a domestic engineer, owner of the former Arehart's Pennzoil in New Manchester, W.Va., and was a representative of the West Virginia Gasoline Dealers Association.

She was a member of the New Cumberland Christian Church and had been affiliated and active with various Christian churches in the area, most recently the First Church of Christ, East Palestine, Ohio.

Through the years, she participated in many community organizations including Scouting, PTA, Toastmistress, Republican Women and area historical societies. She served on the boards of the Hancock County Health Department and the Hancock County Sheltered Workshop and on committees for redistricting of voting precincts in Hancock County. Her greatest interest was the salvation of those she met.

Her husband, George Wood Arehart Jr., whom she married May 22, 1942, died May 15, 1987.

She also was preceded in death by a son, William Russell Arehart; two grandchildren, Brett Burkhart and Amy Jo Burkhart; a great-grandson, Logan Christopher Bezdek, and a brother, Adrian C. Dawson.

Surviving are three children: Jo Anne (David) McKinney of Sandyville, Ohio; Thomas L. (Joyce) Arehart of New Manchester, and Terri Staley of Rogers; a stepdaughter, Helen Louise Bailey of Ocala, Fla., a daughter-in-law, Carol Arehart of Weirton, W.Va., and Steve Roman of Burgettstown, Pa., whom she regarded as a son.

Also surviving are six grandchildren, James L. (Kelly) Arehart and Janet Arehart, both of New Cumberland, Joseph (Lesley) Arehart of Industry, Pa., Toni (Bryce) Bezdek of Rogers, Todd Staley of New Cumberland and Barbara Louise Bailey of East Liverpool.

There are 19 great-grandchildren: Brandi, Brittany and John William Burkhart, Jared (Jordan) Argent, Jonathan and Melanie Arehart, Josephine and Joel Fishback, Garrett and Isaiah Franklin, Dakota, Josephina and Thorn Arehart, Logan and Thera Daudet, Aidan and Lauren Bezdek, Brian (Becca) Marx, Billy (Tanya) Marx, and four great-great-grandchildren: Catelyn Argent, Jessie Marx, Quinlan and Declan Marx; and also by several nieces and nephews.

Private graveside services were held in New Cumberland Cemetery.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, October 12, at the New Manchester Christian Church.
