LISBON - Mason Feisel, the Boardman man accused of killing his Salem girlfriend, decided Friday to give his attorneys some more time before his case comes to trial.

Feisel, 34, is facing a murder charge and had not waived his right to a speedy trial, giving the Columbiana County Prosecutor's Office only until Sept. 3 to prosecute him. After consulting with his attorneys, Charley Kidder and Kelly Linger, Feisel decided waive the time limit to give his attorneys adequate time to prepare his defense.

"We told him there are numerous issues we need to address," Kidder explained in Common Pleas Court Friday.

Linger indicated there could be motions filed possibly involving Feisel's competency to stand trial. She also said at this point the defense has not received any discovery from the case.

Feisel is accused of strangling his long-time girlfriend, Samantha Shasteen, whom he has a 4-year-old daughter with. Shasteen's body was discovered in the bathtub of her Oak Street home by her father, Gary Shasteen, on the morning of June 6.

Feisel, who had been found by Gary Shasteen sleeping in the garage with the doors down and a vehicle running, fled. However, he was found a short time later by police, who reported he was attempting to cut his own throat with a shard of glass and had superficial cuts already on his wrists.

At a preliminary hearing in county Municipal Court, Salem Detective David Talbert had testified Feisel admitted to issues controlling his anger. Investigators had learned Samantha Shasteen had told family she intended to break up with Feisel the night before her body was found.

The case has now been set for jury trial on Nov. 19, with a status conference Nov. 8. Judge C. Ashley Pike said the motions will be handled as they come in.
