LISBON - Columbiana County's unemployment rate remained unchanged in July after three consecutive monthly increases.

The county's jobless rate was 8.2 percent in July, according to figures released Tuesday by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. Ohio's unemployment rate also remained unchanged in July, at 7.2 percent, while the national jobless rate fell from 7.6 percent to 7.2 percent over the same period.

Ohio gained 5,300 new jobs in July after losing 12,500 jobs the month before, which was later revised downward to 8,400. The unemployment rate dropped in 68 of Ohio's 88 counties in July, but job growth in the state lagged behind the national average for the 13th consecutive month.

The unemployment rate is an estimate based on the number of people filing claims and a nationwide telephone survey of 50,000 households. The estimate of job gains and losses is based on a survey of mostly large businesses and government agencies.

The estimated number of unemployed county residents in July remained unchanged at 4,200, while the number of people with jobs declined by 500 to an estimated 46,800. Meanwhile, the number of new filings for benefits increased by 111 in July to 455. The number of people receiving benefits last month totaled 2,722, with the average weekly benefit being $309.

Among the adjoining counties, Columbiana's unemployment rate was higher than Carroll (7.2 percent) and Stark (7.3 percent) but lower than Mahoning (8.6 percent) and Jefferson (10.3 percent).

The county's July rate was the 25th highest in the state, down six positions from June. Meigs County in southern Ohio had the highest jobless rate at 12.3 percent, while Mercer County along the Indiana border continued to have the lowest at 4.5 percent.
