This year’s fair offers something for everyone

July 28, 2013
Morning Journal News

It's time once again to "Wheel on Down" to the Columbiana County Fair.

The 168th edition of the annual fest is scheduled to kick off officially at 5 p.m. Monday with the crowning of the 4-H king and queen. Preliminary events start today with the garden tractor pull at 1 p.m.

While the fair is primarily an opportunity to show off the skills of our county's agricultural population, whether you are a farmer, or a city dweller, there's something to interest everyone.

Special attractions this year include Wednesday night's grandstand concert by local country singer Zach Paxson, with Jeremy Miller as the opening act. Other musical groups and entertainment acts will perform on the midway stage every day.

Other features will include the ever-popular demolition derby Sunday night, as well as the combine demolition derby on Sunday afternoon. There will be truck and tractor pulls on several evenings, and the high school strongman competition is returning this year.

Of course the exhibit booths will be filled with huge pumpkins, squash, beets, turnips and displays of other gigantic horticultural delights.

Members of 4-H clubs will bring their sheep, goats, pigs, cows, horses and steer to compete for prizes, then later will auction them off to the highest bidder.

The best bakers, seamstresses, needlework and paint artists and photographers from the county will display their finest works and compete for awards, with everyone hoping to take home the blue ribbon.

And, last, but certainly not least, the attraction that everyone looks forward to - fair food. The best steak hoagies, french fries, hot sausage, roast beef, funnel cakes, cotton candy and every other carnival culinary confection will be sold at stands along the midway. And rides will entertain the kiddies and the more adventurous adults among us.

So pack up the family and "wheel on down" to Lisbon this week for the annual

Columbiana County Fair. The lineup for this 168th edition promises to be as entertaining as those in the past, so let's hope for fair skies and lots of fair fun.
