Melvin Rose

COLUMBIANA - Melvin Hazen Rose, 90, of Bridgeport, went home to be with his Savior and Lord on Sunday, June 30, 2013 at Whispering Pines Village, Columbiana, OH.

He was born on September 17, 1922 in Wyatt, WV, a son to the late Sterling and Gladys Rose.

Melvin (Mel) is survived by his one daughter, Donna Jo and husband William (Bill) Hood, Canaan Valley, WV; one son, Dennis Mel Rose and wife Cecelia, Columbiana, OH; seven grandchildren: Lori Gilmore, Orofino, ID, William "Billy" Hood, III, Hambleton, WV, Jennifer Marshalek, Lisbon, OH, April Taylor, Morgantown, WV, Alison Rapp Davis, WV, Alexis Hura, Columbiana, OH and Stephanie Nunzir, Winona, OH; 15 great grandchildren, Noah Gilmore, Emily Hura, Caleb Taylor, Cole Rapp, Laim Hood, Anna Marshalek, Gracie Rapp, Aaron Hura, London Hood, Madelyn Marshalek, Ethan Gilmore, Cade Rapp, Layla Nunzir, Brooks Taylor and Amelia Nunzir.

In addition to his parents Melvin was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Joan "Jo" Rose, one sister, Geraldine Mcantyre, and one great granddaughter, Lily Hura.

Melvin attended Roosevelt Wilson High School, where he played football. After High School he enlisted in the Marine Corp., where he served as a Corporal in the Fifteenth Defense Battalion, from 1942-1945, in the Asiatic Pacific during World War II. After returning home, he went to Salem College, where he excelled in football. He was scouted by the Cleveland Browns. He finished his degree in Physical Education while his wife and he started a family. While in college, he took art classes and became an accomplished artist.

Melvin enjoyed playing golf and painting in his free time.

He was a faithful member of Grace Baptist Church, Bridgeport for 32 years. Prior to Grace, he was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church, Clarksburg. He worked for 30 plus years as an insurance adjuster for State Auto in Clarksburg, WV.

Melvin was married to his wife for 68 years before his wife passed away on June 6, 2011. Melvin was a loving husband, father, papa and great papa. His devotion to God was a reflection of how he loved his family. His prayer for his family was: to know God and to trust in Him. He started his mornings with God through prayer and reading his Bible. He led his family by example to pursue a relationship with God.

Melvin will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Local arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Seederly-Mong and Beck Funeral Home.

Friends will be received at the Davis-Weaver Funeral Home, 329 East Main St. Clarksburg, from 10:00 am -12:00 pm, Friday, July 5, 2013, with the funeral at 12:30 pm on the same day with Pastor Jeff Vaughan presiding. Interment will follow at the West Virginia National Cemetery, Grafton, WV. The family invites friends to join them for a military service honoring Melvin, a proud Marine Veteran.
