Leetonia approves pay raises

LEETONIA- Village Council Wednesday night approved raises for village employees which include 5 percent raises for all employees on the police, hourly and salary payrolls, as well as the base rates for the positions. The increases do not apply for elected officials.

According to Fiscal Officer Randy Chismar, council has not approved any raises since 2008 and after several discussions about the issue, a desire to make the wages competitive with other entities was expressed. He said the raises will total approximately $35,000 across all budgets.

In other business, council accepted a bid of $3,000 from Ronald Stouffer for the former Tony's Pizzeria building on Walnut Street. Village administrators noted that Stouffer has indicated he will renovate the property. Council also thanked the Eagles for a $1,500 donation to the fire, EMS and police departments.

Also at the meeting resident Sue Buchanan suggested council form a type of planning committee to address property values and similar issues in the village. She noted that her research showed only five solid property sales in the village the past two years.

A Park Committee meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. July 17 at Village Hall to discuss long-term plans for the Coke Ovens.
