Funds needed for new Salem flag pole

Morning Journal News

SALEM - The Salem Memorial and Patriotic Association is looking for donations to cover materials and labor for a new flag pole on the village green at State Street and Lincoln Avenue.

"We are seeking donors for this project and asking for your support to place the American flag to the prominent spot it should occupy, flying high over the monument that reminds us all of the lives that were sacrificed for our freedoms," Salem Memorial and Patriotic Association President Mel Lippiatt said in a letter requesting assistance.

Several years ago, high winds broke the original flag pole off at the base, with the remaining part of the pole placed further back from the green instead of behind the Veterans Monument. Plans call for the new flag pole to be in place for Memorial Day this year.

Cost estimates for the project include: $1,611.95 for a 35-foot flag pole with dual external halyard and associated parts delivered; $300 for concrete, sand, shims, caulking and other items needed; and $350 for labor for the hole and installation. The total cost was estimated at $2,261.95.

Lippiatt wrote that he's hoping organizations and businesses can help with the materials and labor for the project.

Donations and other offers of assistance with the project can be sent to: Flag Pole Project, Salem Memorial & Patriotic Association, c/o AMVETS Post 45, 750 S. Broadway Ave., Salem, Ohio 44460.
