CALCUTTA - The right northbound lane of state Route 11 just north of the Route 170 overpass was closed for more than an hour on Sunday afternoon, as first responders worked to free a driver from the wreckage of a single-vehicle accident.

Detective Joseph Brophey of the St. Clair Police Department said Bryan Strauss, 40, of Tiltonsville was driving north in the left lane of Route 11 at approximately 3:30 p.m., when his 2008 Honda Accord drifted over the left yellow line towards the concrete center divider. Although the car did not contact the center divider, its tires did hit a patch of snow and ice at the foot of the divider.

According to Brophey, Strauss' attempt to correct course resulted in a loss of control. "As he steered right, the car started to rotate," Brophey said.

The car slid sideways into the right-side guardrail face, crumpling several yards of guardrail before striking an embankment, which flipped the car onto its roof in a roadside ditch. Brophey says Strauss was wearing his seat belt and was not seriously injured, but could not free himself from the wreckage.

The doors on one side of the car were badly smashed and blocked by trees on the other side. After removing one of the damaged doors, rescue crews from Glenmoor and St. Clair volunteer fire departments were able to safely remove Strauss from the car. He was transported by Lifeteam EMS to East Liverpool City Hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries and released.
