LISBON - A man accused of pushing over many grave markers at Springhill Cemetery in Wellsville was bound over to the Columbiana County grand jury when he appeared in Municipal Court Tuesday.
Jacob S. Lowther, 19, West Summit Lane, East Liverpool, is charged with vandalism, accused of being one of four people at the cemetery that night and involved in pushing over the tombstones. One of Lowther's bond conditions is that he have no further contact with any of the co-defendants in the case, which include two juveniles.
Court documents state Wellsville police were alerted about the issue at 9:32 p.m. on Dec. 27 when they responded to someone yelling for help in the cemetery. Someone identified as Jacob Shrive requested an ambulance. At that point, police found a large number tombstones had been shoved over.
The original affidavit provided to the court listed the number at about 40. However, during Tuesday's hearing, Assistant County Prosecutor Don Humphrey said further investigation has revealed the number may be closer to 90 tombstones.
One tombstone belonging to Sarah and John Abraham was found broken into several pieces.
