Potters hold off Bears

Morning Journal News

EAST LIVERPOOL -The charity stripe proved to be the difference as East Liverpool held off Oak Glen in a 53-47 win Wednesday at Potter Fieldhouse.

The Potters connected on 8 more free throws in the contest, finishing 21-of-36 for the game. Oak Glen was 13-of-25.

"Oak Glen is very tough fundamentally and well-coached," said East Liverpool first-year coach Allan Dingey. "We finally took the lead in the third when we were able to get out and run on the fastbreak. That changed the game."

The visiting Golden Bears actually led 23-22 at the half before a 15-9 third quarter gave the Potters the lead.

Dingey said East Liverpool held a 9-point advantage with about 3 minutes left to play, but attempted some "ill-advised" three-pointers that made things a bit interested in the waning moments.

"We were able to hold on and step up to the foul line (and connect) in the final quarter," the coach said.

The Potters (4-5) were paced by the trio of Nikayla Edgell (18 points), Jamie Neville (15) and Sarah Morrell (10), who combined for 43 points. Neville was 7-of-9 at the foul line.

The Bears received a 17-point effort from Vanessa Hissam, who was 9-of-11 at the foul line. Karly Wiley added 10 points.

In JV play, East Liverpool won 35-23 as Caitlyn Davis scored 10, Linsey Rose 8 and Taryn Williams 7. Oak Glen was led by Brie Evans' game-high 13.

East Liverpool returns to the hardwood tonight at Weir. Oak Glen plays a girl-boy varsity doubleheader saturday at home against Weirton Madonna. The girls' varsity tips off at 6 p.m.
