Morning Journal News

EAST LIVERPOOL - An employee at the Heritage WTI facility in East Liverpool was injured in a Saturday afternoon fire, according to a press release from the company.

The unidentified worker was taken by ambulance to East Liverpool City Hospital, where they were treated and released.

The incident occurred at approximately 2:45 p.m. Saturday, when for unknown reasons, a container of hazardous waste reacted in a section of the plant where the containers are prepared for incineration. The reaction caused a fire that was extinguished by an on-site HazMat team. Personnel from the East Liverpool Fire Department also responded to the scene.

Processing of hazardous waste containers was briefly halted, although bulk-waste operations continued as normal.

The release states that environmental regulators have been notified of the incident, which remains under investigation.

The Review attempted, without success, to contact Heritage WTI for further details.
