William Brown

SALEM - William A. Brown, Sr., 86, of, Monroeville, Ohio, passed away on Monday, Dec. 24, 2012 at 1:50 p.m. at Salem Community Hospital. He was born on Dec. 15, 1926 in Olive Hill, Ky. Bill was the son of the late Bert and Mina McCormick Brown.

Bill was a master industrial blacksmith at the former Crucible Steel at one time and he retired in 1974 as a general foreman from Timet in Toronto, Ohio. He had received management training from Wittenberg University. Following retirement he worked for East Fairfield Coal Company.

A member of Monroeville Assembly of God, he was also active in the Free and Accepted Masons, Salineville Lodge No. 348. As a veteran of World War II, he served in Guam and the Phillipines with the U.S. Army. Bill was also a trustee of Brush Creek Township.

Surviving is his wife Ruth E. Brown, whom he married on Nov. 25, 1948. There are three daughters, Georgianna Owens and her husband Jerry, of Kensington, Ohio, Alice McKenzie of Lancaster, Pa., and Becky Richards and her husband Troy, of Crittenden, Ky. There is one son, William A. Brown, Jr. and his wife Ruth Ann, of Wellsville, 13 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Bill is also survived by four sisters, Verna Wolfe of Smithfield, Ohio, Barbara Mays of Calcutta, Joan Copps of Boston, Ga., and Rose Stella of Winter Springs, Fla. There are two brothers, James Brown and his wife Judy, of Hammondsville, Ohio, and Jack Brown and his wife Doris of Salineville.

Besides his parents, a granddaughter Amy Owens, and a sister Jewell Pickens preceded him in death.

Friends may visit Friday afternoon and evening at Dawson Funeral Home where the family will be present from 4 to 8 p.m. A Masonic service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday evening. The funeral service will be on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Tim Cashen officiating. Burial will be in Chestnut Grove Cemetery.
