EAST LIVERPOOL-A Christmas Eve fire near the city's East End damaged a Liverpool Township home and left a woman homeless.

Firefighters from Liverpool Township got the call around noon Monday and responded to 826 Price Ave., where flames were coming from a rental property on a winding portion of the road at the top of a hill. Glenmoor Fire Department provided mutual aid.

Scott Shreve, 24, of LaCroft, whose mother, Amy Smith Cameron, lives in the house, was one of several people in the rural neighborhood who called 911. Shreve said the house is owned by his grandfather, Demple Smith, who lives next door.

Shreve said he was leaving his grandfather's when he saw smoke and flames coming from a bathroom window of the home. "I backed up and ran in and told my pap that the house was on fire," he said.

The two went to the house to check on the occupant. "He tried going in, and I grabbed him and said, 'You're not going in there,' " Shreve said.

Shreve said he heard his mother in the house screaming but that she got out OK. Liverpool Township fire Capt. John Bahen said there were no injuries to occupants or firefighters.

Bahen said the cause and point of origin of the fire are still under investigation. Complicating firefighting efforts was the fact that the house has a double roof, meaning there were hot spots in tight spaces, Bahen said.
