Lisbon has new need for the old street garage

LISBON - Village Council is proceeding with plans to repair the former street garage so it can be reoccupied sometime this spring.

Council voted at this week's meeting to spend a combined $11,000 to continue renovating the old garage located on state Route 164 near the intersection with state Route 517.

The garage was abandoned after the flash flood of 2004 caused major damage, forcing the street department to relocate to the former Center Township garage. The garage is owned by the Columbiana County Park District, which intends to begin using the garage and has given the village until spring to move out.

In October, council voted to spend up to $4,000 to begin repairing the old street department garage, and $2,800 of that money remains. This week council agreed to use the rest of the money to pay Graft Electric of Columbiana $2,372 to make the necessary electrical improvements at the garage, which includes the $1,000 cost of obtaining the necessary state permits.

Council then approved hiring D & R Garage Doors Plus of Austintown to replace the doors for $8,629.

Council is also contemplating constructing a second building that would give the street department the extra space it needs to house the rest of the vehicles that cannot fit into the older and smaller garage. The estimated cost for a cement block building is $24,000 to $25,000.

In other action, council acted on the recommendation of Fire Chief Dave Lewton and approved the addition of Doug Faulk to the fire department. Lisbon firefighters are paid the hourly minimum wage for responding to fire calls.

Mayor Dan Bing also announced village hall would be closed Dec. 24 and Dec. 31.
